In June 2004 we were asked to run a five-week tag rugby course at
Clifton High for thirty-five 5 & 6 year olds. A few weeks into this course we
arranged a free taster session at Elmlea Juniors.
We were delighted with the response – forty-eight 7-11 year olds turned up and
"Rugby Futures" was born – to offer rugby coaching at grassroots level in
Bristol Primary schools.
We started running after-school clubs in September and by January 2005 we had
250 children in 9 schools taking part.

We received some sponsorship money from Jonathan Webb (Ex-England international
and orthopaedic surgeon in Bristol) to buy kit for the coaches and T-shirts for
all the children, which we handed out at the end of the courses.
Our coaches have various playing and coaching experience but the Head Coach
will have at least a Level 1 RFU coaching qualification and will be a qualified
First Aider.
All coaches have, or are in the process of being, CRB Police checked.
Our coaches include some of the Bristol Rugby players and we are establishing
links with Bristol Rugby and Filton College Academy players. We work to the
National Standard Recommendations of one coach to eight 5-7 yr olds and one
coach to twelve 7-11 yr olds.
